Why buy when you can borrow? Borrow useful Things for your home, projects and adventures with this collection of items no one expects to find at a library. The Library of Things currently includes: Hotspots, Chromebooks, Launchpad Tablets, Preserve the Memory equipment, Storytime To Go Kits, and Telescopes you can check out with your library card!

  • General Information
    • To reserve items from the Library of Things, please call Customer Service 801.943.4636 or stop by your local branch and talk with a librarian
    • 7-day checkout period (Hotspots 21 days)
    • Overdue fines are $1 per day
    • Limit of 5 items per card
    • Only adults with a library account in good standing may checkout these items
    • All items listed are renewable—subject to hold lists
    • Items must be checked out and returned at the same branch
    • Items can be placed on hold at any County Library location

Blood Pressure Monitors

The County Library is lending a limited number of Blood Pressure Monitors in order to improve health outcomes in our communities, and in partnership with the Utah Department of Health, as high blood pressure is one of the major health disparities in the valley.

Blood Pressure Monitors

The County Library is lending a limited number of Blood Pressure Monitors in order to improve health outcomes in our communities, and in partnership with the Utah Department of Health, as high blood pressure is one of the major health disparities in the valley.

The Library System is offering the monitors as a courtesy. Staff do not give medical advice to patrons. Reserve a blood-pressure monitor from Kearns Branch.

  • 21-day checkout period
  • Equipment and all peripheral materials (cords, case, etc.) must be returned together in the condition in which they were checked out and on the same day the monitor is returned
  • One blood pressure monitor per library card

Troubleshooting the device:

  1. Power off (wait 15 minutes) and then restart the device
  2. Check or replace the batteries
  3. Charge the device
  4. Try a different charging cord if the device is not charging when plugged in
  5. Power off then restart the device
  6. If necessary, contact the County Library for further help

Chromebooks

The County Library is lending a limited number of Chromebooks. Chromebooks are laptops that run on Google's Chrome operating system. If you have WiFi, you can use a Chromebook to easily access the web, use Gmail and YouTube, or create documents and spreadsheets using Google Docs.

  • Only one Chromebook per library card

  • Equipment and all peripheral materials (charging cord, carrying case, gel case, etc.) must be returned together in the condition in which they were checked out and on the same day the Chromebook is returned

Chromebooks will be automatically disabled if more than one day overdue

The County Library is lending a limited number of hotspot devices. Portable hotspots provide free, unlimited high-speed internet access from almost anywhere when using a WiFi-enabled device such as a phone, tablet, or laptop.

Hotspots

The County Library is lending a limited number of hotspot devices. Portable hotspots provide free, unlimited high-speed internet access from almost anywhere when using a WiFi-enabled device such as a phone, tablet, or laptop.

  • Hotspots are located at all libraries for check out, subject to availability
  • 21-day checkout period
  • Equipment and all peripheral materials (sim card, cords, adapters, plug-ins, etc.) must be returned together in the condition in which they were checked out and on the same day the Hotspot is returned
  • Only one hotspot per library card
  • Hotspot service will be automatically disabled on any overdue devices more than one day overdue; and disabled devices will NOT broadcast a WiFi signal
  • Hotspots have a range of 35-40 feet, battery life of 3–4 hours, and charging takes 1–2 hours
  • The County Library Service is dependent on the strength of the carrier’s signal, so there may be some locations where these devices will not be able to broadcast WiFi—Signal Strength may vary.
  • Like other County internet services, hotspots are filtered for content and bandwidth usage
  • Hotspots will work in all 50 states as long as there is service in that area
  • Hotspots will NOT work for international signals
  • Up to 10 devices can be connected to a hotspot at the same time

Troubleshooting the hotspot device:

  1. Charge the device
  2. Try a different charging cord if the device is not charging when plugged in
  3. Power off then restart the device
  4. If necessary, contact the number on the hotspot case

Kids Nature Kits

The County Library is lending a limited number of Kids Nature Kits, made possible by a grant from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the Disney Conservation Fund and provided by Utah's Hogle Zoo, contain everything kids need to explore the great outdoors in their own backyards and beyond.

Kids Nature Kits

Take a closer look at the bug you nearly stepped on. Identify nearby vegetation and wildlife. These Kids Nature Kits, made possible by a grant from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the Disney Conservation Fund and provided by Utah's Hogle Zoo, contain everything kids need to explore the great outdoors in their own backyards and beyond. Backpacks contain binoculars, bug viewers, butterfly nets, clip-on camera lenses, common species ID cards, and information on the Jordan River ecosystem.

  • Kids Nature Kits are located at all libraries for checkout, subject to availability
  • These kits are best for children and families
  • A smartphone may be helpful
  • Seven-day checkout period
  • All contents of the kit must be returned together in the condition in which they were checked out and on the same day in which the Kids Nature Kit is returned
  • Overdue fines and fees for missing parts may occur if returned late or partially returned

Launchpad Tablets

The County Library is lending a limited number of Launchpad Tablet devices. These are durable/portable tablets that have pre-installed apps that support early literacy, with no access to the internet.

Launchpad Tablets

  • Launchpad tablets are currently located at Draper, Holladay, Kearns, Millcreek, Smith, Taylorsville, Tyler, West Jordan, and West Valley for check out, subject to availability
  • Equipment and all peripheral materials (cords, adapters, plug-ins, etc.) must be returned together in the condition in which they were checked out and on the same day the Launchpad Tablet is returned
  • Launchpad Tablets cannot access the internet
  • Launchpad Tablets have 10 learning activities preinstalled

  1. Power off and then restart the device
  2. Charge the device
  3. Try a different charging cord if the device is not charging when plugged in
  4. If necessary, contact Customer Service for further support

Preserve the Memory Equipment

Transfer old memory media to new media. The County Library provides the equipment/device, while you supply your own memory device(s) to transfer and save data. Preserve the Memory Equipment

Transfer old memory media to new media. The County Library provides the equipment/device, while you supply your own memory device(s) to transfer and save data. In some cases, other equipment may also need to be supplied by the patron. Patrons use the equipment themselves with minimal staff assistance.

  • ClearClick Video2Digital Converter—Record and digitalize video from VHS, VCRs, DVD players, DVRs, camcorders, Hi8, & retro gaming systems
  • ezcap cassette tape to MP3 converter—Converts your cassette collection to MP3 format.
  • Kodak Scanza Film Scanner—Film scanner converts old 35mm, 126, 110, Super 8 & 8mm negatives & slides to .jpeg digital files
  • Reshow cassette converting tape player—Converts old cassettes to MP3 format via a USB cable
  • VCR—Plays VHS tapes
  • Wolverine Film2Digital MovieMaker (Reel)—A fully automated apparatus to digitize 8 and Super 8 movie reels (no sound and no split 16mm) with frame-by-frame digitizing for high-quality digital conversion
  • Wolverine Snap 20MP Slide Converter—Convert 35mm, 127 (1.5x1. 5"), 126Kpk, 110, Advantex APS slides & negatives to digital in three seconds

Checkout Information:

  • Preserve the Memories equipment are located at Draper, Holladay, Kearns, Magna, Millcreek, and West Jordan for check out, subject to availability
  • Adults with a library account in good standing may checkout Preserve the Memories equipment
  • Equipment and all peripheral materials (cords, adapters, etc.) must be returned together in the condition in which they were checked out and on the same day the Preserve the Memories equipment is returned

Storytime To Go Kits

Provides families with fun books and materials to create their own awesome storytimes at home! Kits include three books, activity sheets, and one or two toys.

  • Storytime To Go Kits are located at all libraries for check out, subject to availability
  • All contents of the kit (books, toys, cards, accessories, etc.) must be returned together in the condition in which they were checked out and on the same day in which the Storytime to Go Kit is returned
  • The kits are cleaned after every checkout
  • Each kit comes with a list and pictures of all items included in the kit for easy return
  • Each library has a total of 20 backpacks: 10 designed for the babies and toddlers and 10 for pre-k children

The County Library is lending a limited number of Orion StarBlast Telescopes at each branch. The County Library’s telescope lending program is made possible through a partnership with the Salt Lake Astronomical Society. Follow the safety rules and don’t look at the sun! Enjoy this STEM experience.

The County Library is lending a limited number of Orion StarBlast Telescopes at each branch. The County Library’s telescope lending program is made possible through a partnership with the Salt Lake Astronomical Society. Follow the safety rules and don’t look at the sun! Enjoy this STEM experience.

  • Telescopes are located at all libraries for check out, subject to availability
  • Only 1 telescope per library card
  • The Telescope and all peripheral materials (fanny pack, eyepiece, rubber eye guard, lens covers, view finder, books, head gear, brush pen, instructions, batteries, and base) must be returned together in the condition in which they were checked out and on the same day in which the Telescope is returned
