This summer, “Make A Splash” at your neighborhood Salt Lake County Library by participating in the very popular Summer Reading program. The fun starts on June 1 and lasts through August 15, with a different program for three age groups. Children will participate in the “Make A Splash @ Your Library” program, the teen reading program is called “Make Waves @ Your Library” and the adult program is “Dive Into Reading.” The programs each feature specially designed reading records to encourage the whole family to keep track of their reading progress throughout the summer. 28,000 patrons participated in the Summer Reading program last year at Salt Lake County Libraries, and we anticipate more to join in this year.

Sign-up for this year’s program begins on Tuesday, June 1, and the library wants book lovers of all reading levels to jump in head first. All participants will receive a variety of incentive prizes, a different one each month and unique prizes for the three age groups. The prize in August when you complete your reading record is a free book (awarded August 1-15 only).

There will also be a watercolor art contest this year, “Splash Of Color.” The contest is open to ages 3 through adult throughout the Summer Reading program. Submissions should have a water-related theme/subject in some way. Artwork must be original and created by using watercolor paints only. Other paints (acrylic, oils, pastels, etc.) are not acceptable. Entries will be juried and the winning artwork will appear in an exhibit that will be shown at most of the libraries. The winning paintings will also appear on the library’s website and bookmarks will be made available to the public showing the top three paintings in each age category. Winners will be announced by the end of August, 2010. Entries must be submitted to a County Library with an attached entry form by July 31, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. Library locations can be found at slcolibrary.org. Entry forms can be found at saltlakesummerreading.com.

Also, kids and teens up to age 18 will have a chance to have existing fines reduced this summer. “Flush Your Fines” will be available through August 15 for previously accrued overdue fines for patrons with juvenile library cards (limit of $5.00 reduced fines per person). Ask in the library for more information, or check our website at slcolibrary.org.
