Some storytimes require preregistration.

The role of storytime is to inspire lifelong reading habits, encourage a love of children’s literature, give children and caregivers a positive experience with the library and perpetuate cultural literacy.

Books and instruction in Early Literacy Skills are an integral part of all storytimes. Other tools may be used to support storytime programs: Finger Plays, Action Rhymes, Simple Art Activities, Movement Activities and Creative Dramatics. A variety of storytimes, often customized for different age groups, are held at most County Libraries. These include Baby-&-Me, Toddler Time, Preschool, Drop-In and Combined Storytimes.

Goals of Storytime for Children:

• Introduce literature and the sound and flow of words
• Introduce standard stories, fairy tales and songs to enhance cultural literacy
• Provide a socialization experience for children
• Provide an entertaining and positive introduction to the library and to literacy

Goals of Storytime for Parents/Caregivers:

• Introduce early literacy concepts including the six pre-reading skills and dialogic reading
• Re-introduce standard stories, fairy tales and songs as a reminder that these can be used at home with children to enhance cultural literacy
• Introduce and encourage the use of library resources, including staff
• Provide an entertaining and positive library experience
